TDIH: January 17, 1965

On this day in 1965, AJ Foyt was seriously injured after his brakes failed during the Motor Trend 500 at Riverside. Attempting to avoid Junior Johnson and Marvin Panch entering turn 9, Foyt drove off the track at over 100mph and violently flipped through the infield. After a quick arrival to the crumpled Holman-Moody prepped Ford Galaxy, the track doctor pronounced an unconcious and blue-faced Foyt dead at the scene. Parnelli Jones would revive his fellow driver and good friend, however, after clearing AJ’s mouth of dirt and restoring his breathing. Foyt wouldn’t return for nearly 3 months while recovering from several injuries suffered in the crash, including a broken back and crushed sternum.
