TDIH: February 25, 1956

Curtis Turner captures the first win in NASCAR’s Convertible Division, driving a 1956 Ford Sunliner to easy victory on Daytona Beach. Leading the final 34 of 39 laps, he would finish one lap up on second place, his teammate Fireball Roberts. The third driver for DePaolo Engineering, Joe Weatherly, started on pole and led the first 5 laps, before a water pump forced him from the race after 20 laps. Turner would win the following two events in the series, ending the season with a record 22 wins and 16 poles in 42 events he appeared in. Despite the wins, he had to settle for second in points to a more consistent Bob Welborn, who with only 3 wins, was awarded the title having scored more top-5’s and top-10’s.
